OpenWeb is a "white-labeled" (software framework that can be customized by individual clients to suit their specific needs whether it be visual or functional) resort-based software that takes "revenue management to the next level and offers you online golf, spa, dining or activities booking online." It also allows you to "control and maximize inventory over a much larger potential market" to capitalize on your online presence and reach.
The primary functionality of the software is to aid users in searching and booking activities at resort-styled venues but in exchange for versatility; OpenWeb sacrificed usability and transparency. All search fields were generically labeled which often led to confusion because it left users guessing as to what items to select. User's confusion was then further exasperated when they were presented with search or filter fields that were blank or did not pertain to the type of activity they were interested in. There were additional issues with search result displays, the booking flow (excessive, repetitive steps), and just other general usability problems.
My redesign attempted to bring the simplicity and service of a Concierge at a high-end resort to their online presence with improved search functionality and a more modern approach to the site's overall design and architecture. My design utilized large, open page layouts to allow users to more easily browse and digest the site's content and incorporated large, beautiful images to help the user "picture themselves" doing the activity they're viewing to create a sense of desire and motivation. My design was also modular and simplistic so that it could be white-labeled and used by different clients, for different kinds of activities, with different visual elements.
My name's Brian and I'm an Industrial and User Experience Designer currently living in San Diego, CA with a passion for designing simple and elegant solutions to complex problems.
I obtained my BFA in Industrial Design at Carnegie Mellon University in 2012 and spent a semester abroad at the Technische Universiteit Eindhoven in the Netherlands, studying interaction design and traveling Eastern Europe to enrich and broaden my views. After that, I interned with Walt Disney Imagineering and found a love for creating products and experiences that excite & enrich people's lives.
